A’ja Wilson, star of the Las Vegas Aces and three-time league MVP, was awarded her fourth MVP of the WNBA title on Sep. 19.
After winning her third MVP just last year, Wilson shocked WNBA fans by receiving this honor again in back-to-back seasons. Wilson joins Cynthia Cooper-Dyke as the only players to win this award consecutively but she is the first player in WNBA history to win four MVPs beating out Lisa Leslie and Lauren Jackson.
Wilson set the record for the league’s most points ever in a season averaging 26.9 points per game and averaged 11.9 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game, too. Along with that, Wilson had the second highest field goal percentage in the regular season at 51.8%. With these impressive stats, there soon became little suspense as to who was going to receive the 2025 MVP award.
“They wrote us all off, but we showed up every single day,” Wilson said after receiving the award. “It has my name on it, but it’s all of us. There is no [award] without each and every last one of you guys.”
As evident in her response, the basketball star is known for her selflessness and her team-first approach to the game. This is not only reflected in her individual stats, but, most importantly to her, her team’s successes. On the season, the Aces finished with an impressive 30-14 record, averaging 84.4 points and 31.6 rebounds as a team.
“My main goal is exactly what we need to do today, is to get a win against a really good Indiana Fever team,” Wilson said before a recent playoff game.
Heading into the championship series, the WNBA star is ready to get back to work. Wilson looks to lead the Aces to their third WNBA title, this year facing off against the Indiana Fever after defeating the Seattle Storm in the first round of the playoffs.
