Buc-ee’s, a popular chain of southern gas stations, is making its way to Virginia with an estimated opening date of June 30. While many are excited about the addition, not all are aware of why this is a Texas-sized deal.
First built in 1982, Arch “Beaver” Aplin III took his love for all things Texas and made one of the largest and most popular convenience stores in the country. Expanding from its first location in Lake Jackson, Texas, to one of its most recent in Johnstown, Colorado, Buc-ee’s has dominated gas station sales in the southern part of America and has begun its extension to the north and midwest.
“Everybody remembers the first time they go to a Buc-ee’s,” English teacher Tanner McClelland said. “It’s a really big deal for many reasons.”
From the minute it opened its doors in Texas, Buc-ee’s has been an internet sensation and the go-to place for some gas and good-old Texan sustenance. Including a variety of snacks, southern decor, and Buc-ee the Beaver merchandise, it’s impossible for a customer to leave without some Buc-ee’s spiritwear in their hands.
However, Buc-ee’s is mainly known for its roadtrip snacks, including its famous BBQ sandwich, mixed nuts, and beef jerky. Its country-wide cleanest bathrooms are also a draw for many travelers.
“I had a very good experience there,” sophomore Lucas Heflin said. “It was very clean and easy to navigate. It’s a great way to take a break from the road and grab any items you might need.”
Due to heavy anticipation, it seems many will be attending the grand opening of the Virginia Buc-ee’s in Rockingham County. While there are currently over 50 Buc-ee’s locations already, creator Arch “Beaver” Alpin III does not seem to be giving up his American dream anytime soon.
With the help of Buc-ee the Beaver, southern culture continues to spread across the country, one insanely huge gas station at a time.
“It’s worth the hype,” science teacher Caitlin Leitz said. “Everyone I know who goes [to Buc-ee’s] is pleasantly surprised and leaves as a huge fan. I will be going to the new Buc-ee’s, and if you haven’t been, you should go!”
