The Very Last Resort, a teenage indie rock/alt band formed by Ian Crittenden, Houston Johnson, Keelyn Anderson, Vincent Dicaro, and Gabriel Berentzen, released their long awaited debut album, “Make Believe and Made For Me,” on Oct. 10. While the album itself is highly impressive, the effort put into it, all the way up to its release, is a feat to be recognized as well.
The album has been in the works since late May; however a majority of the songs were written at various times including “Shake Me Awake,” which was written two years prior to the album’s release. Originally, The Very Last Resort had planned on releasing a 6-track EP, but their material grew into ten songs that would better fit a full length album.
“We knew that we had a lot of our own songs, and we just always had a plan that we were going to record and release as many of them as possible,” senior and foundational guitarist Ian Crittenden said. “An album just seemed like a natural step that made the most sense, and I think we all stand by that.”
Each instrument featured in the album was performed by the members of the band and did not include any synthetic instruments. While the album stays with the band’s signature indie rock theme, it also dives into various other styles, such as classic, garage, and progressive rock.
“Each song is a vital description of our sound and the album would be missing something if even just one of these songs wasn’t here,” Crittenden said.
Album production wrapped up in mid-August with the help of the band’s producer, Billy Hughes of Probos Sound. Working with a professional and a variety of software and equipment allowed each member to walk away with insight on the recording process and a better understanding on how to bring conceptual material to life.
“The most important lesson I learned was to take your time with things and don’t settle for ‘just okay,’” Liberty University freshman and lead guitarist Houston Johnson said. “Take your time with things and make them good!”
Despite the early morning and late night recording sessions, the band was able to navigate through their stress and busy schedules to produce an extraordinary album. Already working on new music for future releases, The Very Last Resort continues to explore the musical scene and push creative boundaries.
“I adored the experience and the knowledge that I’ve gained,” senior and lead vocalist Keelyn Anderson said. “I just love having the chance to sing in that setting.”
