“Scream VI”: Ghostface Kills Return

After “Scream V” was labeled as one of the most well-received films of the franchise, it seemed like a guarantee that the wildly popular horror series would continue its success with its next addition. Now that “Scream VI” has hit theaters, it is safe to say that the newest Ghostface film is one of the most exciting ones yet.

The main plot of the film starts with the returning characters from “Scream V” leaving their hometown of Woodburo in search of a chance at peace and a new life in New York City. Unfortunately, the cast finds that they may never escape serial killer Ghostface and his bloodshed. Without spoiling too much, the main cast devises a plan to trap Ghostface that goes horribly wrong. After a mix up of who the real Ghostface may be, the remaining cast endures what may tease a potential “Scream VII” release.

“Scream VI far exceeded my expectations,” senior Anirud Sharma said. “I thought after the last movie being relatively average that I have seen the best part of the franchise already. But after watching the newest one, this may be the best ‘Scream’ I have seen since the original. The opening scene and the intensity of the movie were by far my favorite parts.”

The reviews from fans and critics have been pouring in since the film’s release. Most reviews are positive, with nods to the opening scene and how the kills, throughout the film, were realistic and plausible for the occasion.

“Previous Screams seemed very predictable and you knew who was going to die,”  an IMDb Reviewer said. “But in the newest one, you truly have no idea what is going to happen next and who will survive.”

For this film, Ghostface did not limit himself to the movie theaters; he also made his way into the news with a few viral marketing stunts. In early March, people dressed up as the famous villain in multiple cities around the country, promoting interest in the new film. In Sonoma, California, where the original “Scream” was filmed, a person wearing a Ghostface costume was spotted standing at a street corner, which prompted multiple 911 calls. Others dressed as Ghostface have been spotted in cities such as New Orleans and St. Louis as well

In this instance, with this film, the pre-release hype fit the final product.

“Scream VI was by far my favorite horror movie the past few years,” senior Ben Seidel said. “It feels like for the first time in a while, the characters in the movie felt much more energized and they had an actual passion in what they were saying and doing. It had a very strong plot; the special effects were top tier; and it was very unpredictable as well.”
